La Salette
From a different angle
The construction of the La Salette Chapel dates back to 1870. At that time, the country was ravaged by a terrible drought. Oliveira de Azeméis was no exception and also had difficulties with water scarcity. So, on July 5th of that year, it was decided to make a procession with Santo Cristo to Monte Crasto, in order to ask for rain. In fact, the procession arrived at the place and at that moment it began to rain copiously and, appearing to everyone as a miraculous event, Abbot João José Correia dos Santos proposed the construction of a chapel in that place, under the invocation of Our Lady of La Salette. The images were ordered and construction of the chapel began. The images arrived in 1875, remaining in the Main Church, and after five years they were transferred to the chapel, which was then completed.
